Hoffman Enclosure Selection for Real-World Electrical Upgrades

I manage purchasing for a 120-person manufacturing company—roughly $340k a year across 15 vendors, mostly MRO and electrical supplies. I’m not an electrical engineer. I’m the person who actually puts the order in and then gets the phone call when it doesn’t fit.

Situation 1: Indoor circuit breaker panel upgrades

Most indoor panel work doesn’t need a heroic enclosure. But it does need thinking about what’s inside and who’s around it. In our machine shop, dust gets everywhere. A standard NEMA 1 box with knockouts is technically fine, but it’s not great when someone sprays contact cleaner or a grinder throws sparks nearby.

For those jobs, I usually recommend—and order—a gasketed NEMA 12 Hoffman enclosure with a solid door and keyed latch. It costs more than a basic NEMA 1 box, but it keeps dust out and makes the panel more presentable. What about size? Give yourself room to spare beyond what the drawing shows. It’s hard to add space later. I know the temptation is to order the smallest box the electrician asks for. Why not always NEMA 1?

Situation 2: Outdoor, washdown, and chemical exposure: fiberglass

For outdoor locations, any place that gets hosed down, or chemical processing areas, steel will eventually corrode—even painted steel. Stainless is an option, but it’s heavy and can be expensive. That’s where a Hoffman fiberglass enclosure earns its keep.

I’ll admit to an initial misjudgment here. When I first started buying enclosures, I assumed fiberglass was a compromise—a plastic box for people who couldn’t afford stainless. What I see buyers get wrong: choosing the shallowest model because it looks right on the CAD file. When the electrician actually installs contact blocks and wires into tight radius, depth gets eaten up fast. Looking back, I should have specified deep enclosures from the start on a project for a packaging line. At the time, the shallow one was the only one in stock, and the project manager didn’t want to wait a week.
