What's the difference between Hoffman NEMA 1, 3R, 4, 4X, and 12 enclosures?

When someone searches for an “air filter for generator” in our world, they almost always mean the filter that goes in the enclosure's inlet vent. The important numbers are the fan's airflow (CFM), the filter's pressure drop, and the filter's particle efficiency (meaning how many particles it catches). A filter that's too dense will starve the fan. A filter that's too coarse will let dust settle on the contacts.
Don't buy a filter by dimensions alone. I did that on a 40-part order in 2022. Every filter was the same size but had different pressure drop specs. What does FPR mean on an air filter?

Here's something vendors won't tell you: FPR is a marketing-friendly scale, not a replacement for engineering data. If you're sizing a filter for a generator enclosure or a Hoffman control panel enclosure, use the manufacturer's CFM and pressure-drop curves, not the FPR number. FPR is useful for a 1-inch home AC filter. It's not enough for industrial ventilation.
Can a dirty air filter cause AC not to cool?
Yes, and it's one of the most common causes of weak cooling. A dirty filter restricts airflow. Less air moving across the evaporator coil means the coil gets colder, then it can freeze. Frozen coil = no cooling, or seriously reduced cooling. The compressor also gets stressed because it's not carrying enough heat away. This is true for central AC, mini-splits, and to a lesser degree, enclosure cooling units.
The same logic applies to enclosure fans. If you never change the filter media on a ventilated enclosure, the airflow drops. I've seen a NEMA 12 control panel with a filter that hadn't been touched in four years—the interior looked like a dryer lint trap. The drives were derating themselves to avoid overheating. New filter, cleaned fan, problem solved. The best part? The fix cost $25 in filter media. The cost of not doing it: production downtime.
Will a supplier take my small enclosure order seriously?
This one is personal. When I was starting out, I needed one small Hoffman enclosure and a couple of accessories. Total order around $220. One distributor basically told me to call back when I had a real project. The next one quoted it correctly, answered my questions, and shipped on time.
