If you're looking for a single answer to the Hoffman enclosure question, here it is: there isn't one. I know that's not the satisfying response most engineers want. But after six years of buying Hoffman enclosures and accessories for a 40-person industrial controls integrator, I've learned that the right box depends on environment, heat load, and how much maintenance you're willing to schedule.

Scenario A: Indoor Panel, Low Heat Load
If the panel only contains a micro PLC controller, a small power supply, and a few relays, the internal heat is pretty small. A sealed NEMA 1 or NEMA 12 Hoffman enclosure often does the job without fans. In my first year, I assumed every panel with a PLC needed ventilation. After a summer of cleaning dust out of filtered enclosures, I changed my mind. No fan means no air path, and no air path means no dust. - Heat load: A micro PLC controller by itself is low heat. Add transformers, VFDs, or heaters, and you need an actual wattage calculation.
- Air exchange vs cooling: For moderate dust-free heat, a Hoffman vented enclosure and Hoffman enclosure fans work. For dirty areas, keep filters on schedule. If filters won't be serviced, use a non-ventilated heat exchanger.
- Filter direction: When you replace filters, the arrow goes with airflow. In an intake kit, point the arrow at the fan. The stiffer mesh side faces downstream, not out.
- Accessories: Latches, hinges, mounting plates, and screws. I include them in the TCO because ordering a missing panel plate late usually costs more than the plate itself.
Some people think a stainless steel fuel filter means the whole skid is corrosion-proof. That's only true for the fuel path, not the electrical enclosure. If the control panel gets the same washdown as the stainless steel fuel filter, the enclosure needs the same environmental rating.
